The NEED FOR TECHNOLOGY IN OUR CLASSROOM
"It cannot replace great teachers but it can support great teaching as class sizes become larger"
- Jessie Woolley-Wilson
Close your eyes and imagine the perfect classroom. Aside from the students, the comfortable classroom, what tools do you have in your classroom? For me, I see technology. Technology is a tool embedded into our enriched program of teaching in order for students to participate and engage in learning. Living in the 21st century, technology plays immense roles in the lives of people today. Our students are using these technologies outside the classroom, so what better ways to have students take risks and enhance their learning by putting these tools into our classrooms. Students NEED technology in the classroom in order to stay motivated, differentiate the learning, and provide hands-on real world connections into their lives. Here are some ways that prove to us technology is needed in our classrooms.

1. Differentiated Learning
- This allows students a hands-on approach to learning.
- Caters to students who can work independently, in small groups, and as a whole
- e-learning provides students to work at their own pace
- provides extra support to students who need audio/visual components

2. Assessment
- Using online quizzes as a class the teacher is able to see
*who is answering the questions
*where specific students need support
*and where they can go from here
- Helps teacher identify those having misconceptions and can help them sooner rather than later
- Students and teachers can use technology to record and share information
- When creating files and power points this enables the teacher to put comments on the slides, which offers descriptive feedback
- Student portfolios are available online to help compile students online progress.

3. Collaboration
- Students are able to collaborate in small or large groups using technology
- Creates social interaction as they become interactive with presentations, share
techniques and appreciate each other’s skills

4. Real World Connection
- We are living in the 21st century and technology is something that is embedded into
our student’s lives. They are comfortable with technology and are able to use different devices.
- When applying a real world connection into the classroom, students become motivated and
comfortable to manipulate and use these tools to enhance their learning.
- Connecting with their real world tools makes students become motivated to learn and excited to use these tools in the classroom.

5. Tools
Students have access to much more than just the Internet. Here are some examples:
- Internet: e-learning, research, games, quizzes, educational websites, Google
- Programs: Smart Board technology, PowerPoint, Windows Media Maker, iMovie, iPad,
cameras, iPod, Elmo, etc.
- Resources: Audio/visual support, YouTube, dictionary and thesaurus, Pinterest

6. Curriculum - i.e. Literacy
- Students are able to see vocabulary and use it with diagrams and videos to clarify
meaning and concepts
- Engages students by promoting literacy through virtual text
- Students have the chance to share sites, engage in online activities which in turn creates a
longer lasting connection to the concepts
- Blogging allows students to write their work and view those concepts of others. Students are able to ‘reply’ to others using their findings.

Possible Concerns
- Budget
- Finding the balance between technology and traditional learning
- Assessing carefully
YouTube
Douglas Thomas talks about how digital media is encouraging students to become critical thinkers and also enumerates the many ways in which technology can compliment literacy lessons. This is interesting to hear because it is the progression we are moving towards. To hear what Mr. Thomas has to say, follow the link below.
